¿Qué es la
conjuntivitis?
Muy
simplemente, conjuntivitis significa inflamación de la piel – la conjuntiva –
del ojo. Hay muchas causas para la conjuntivitis.
¿Es la
conjuntivitis la misma que la diagnosis de ‘Pink Eye’?
Cuando una
persona dice las palabras ‘Pink Eye’, significa una infección por un virus, o ‘conjuntivitis
viral’. Pero, no cada caso de conjuntivitis representa infección con virus. Hay
otras tipos, por ejemplo: de alérgia o ‘conjuntivitis alérgico’; conjuntivitis
que resulta de exposición a un químico, se llama ‘conjuntivitis químico’ y
también, conjuntivitis causada por bacterias – aunque esta es una causa más
raro.
Entonces,
¿no todas formas de conjuntivitis son contagiosas?
Sí, es
correcto. Si Ud. piensa que tiene conjuntivitis, necesita visitar su
oftalmólogo por un examen completo para determinar la causa.
¿Qué son las
síntomas de conjuntivitis, no importa la forma?
En la
mayoría de los casos, síntomas de conjuntivitis son: un ojo rojo, hinchado y
enfermizo. El ojo está lagrimeando y puede tener la sensación de picazón o ardor.
Cuando causada por infección, usualmente las síntomas empiezan en sólo un ojo,
y a veces se mueven al otro. Pero con algo como alérgia o exposición a algo en
el ambiente, ambos ojos pueden estar involucrados simultáneamente.
Si tengo la
conjuntivitis, ¿qué es el tratamiento?

What is
conjunctivitis?
Very simply,
conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the skin – the conjunctiva – of the eye.
There are many causes for conjunctivitis.
Is
conjunctivitis the same as the diagnosis of ‘Pink Eye’?
When a
person says the words ‘Pink Eye’, it means an infection caused by a virus, or ‘viral
conjunctivitis’. But, not every case of
conjunctivitis represents a viral infection.
There are other forms, for example: from allergy or ‘allergic
conjunctivitis’; conjunctivitis that results from a chemical exposure, called ‘chemical
conjunctivitis’ and also, conjunctivitis caused by bacteria, although this is a
very rare cause.
Then, not
every form of conjunctivitis is contagious?
Yes, that’s
correct. If you think you have
conjunctivitis, you need to visit your ophthalmologist for a complete exam to
determine the cause.
What are the
symptoms of conjunctivitis, regardless of the type?
In the
majority of cases, the symptoms of conjunctivitis are: a red, swollen and
sick-appearing eye. The eye tears and
can have a sensation of itch or burning.
When the cause is infectious, usually the symptoms begin in only one
eye, and then can spread to the other.
But when the cause is allergic or exposure to something in the
environment, both eyes can be involved simultaneously.
If I have
conjunctivitis, what is the treatment?
The treatment
depends on the cause. First, if you
think you have the symptoms of conjunctivitis, make an appointment with your
ophthalmologist. Only he or she can
determine what the diagnosis is. But, in
general, if the conjunctivitis is the result of a viral infection, there is no
medication to cure it. Your own immune
system will fight the infection. There
are different drops, however, that your doctor can prescribe for you to
alleviate the symptoms.
If you have
an allergy, there are drops for allergy eyes—some are sold without a
precription in the pharmacy. A bacterial
infection requires an antibiotic, and, if you have a chemical exposure, it is
important that you visit your doctor or emergency room immediately to wash out
the eye and prevent further damage.
